The presentation will focus on long-term policy implications of the Food Labeling rule and other similar proposed or enacted food policies on federal, state and local levels. The obesity epidemic drives most food regulation today. While the Food Labeling rule technically pursues a variety of health and nutrition goals, the major overhaul of the nutrition label should be viewed in the broader context of anti-obesity policy. Unfortunately, the proposed Food Labeling rule is unlikely to impact obesity rates. While there are specific problems with the label itself, the problem is systemic and common to all food regulation. Ultimately, the regulatory approach is ineffective in producing successful solutions to obesity. Solving the obesity problem will require private sector innovation and not government regulation.

  • Focusing on consumers’ needs
  • Re-formatting labels for readability
  • Innovation, not regulation
